4193657Transitioning to an assisted living community can be unsettling for Huntsville seniors who’ve gotten used to a familiar place and way of doing things.

It’s important to understand that a change in residence is one of the most stressful events in a person’s life because it disrupts an established routine and usually involves packing, discarding and moving what may be a lifetime of possessions. This can be compounded by the recent death of a spouse, which can prompt some to want/need to downsize.

It’s understandable that some many have misconceptions about assisted living communities because there are different kinds of places for seniors in varied stages of health and aging. Assisted Living communities serve those of us who are still in good health and able to take care of ourselves (but appreciate some help when needed).

For grown children concerned their aging parents may need extra care, “the talk” about moving to assisted living should be gradual, say experts like elder advisor Gail Samaha. She recommends the senior and family members should tour a community like Regency Retirement Village of Huntsville to see what it is actually like and talk to residents who already live here.

The parent may be surprised to learn they can enjoy living in a building with their friends with food and fun activities provided for them. They also find their privacy respected. Basically, they have their own space, yet they’re surrounded by support if needed.

Samaha said the topic can be brought up in a non-threatening way such as telling the elder, while still in good health, that the family wants to know the senior’s wishes today so everyone can know what to do later. The senior may realize the peace of mind created for everyone if the path ahead is defined rather than a glaring question mark on the far side of an awkward and uncomfortable conversation. What a relief when the senior takes the initiative to find and move to a place like Regency Retirement Village where they will be well cared for and live more than just comfortably.
