Welcome to another edition of Therapy Corner!
October is National Physical Therapy month, so in this edition I wanted to talk about general physical therapy. Physical therapy addresses a broad range of issues with the primary goal of allowing an individual to optimize function and quality of life. Common issues addressed by Physical Therapy (PT) include difficulty walking, pain, balance, stroke recovery, arthritis, neurological issues, and fall recovery/prevention, just to name a few.
Therapists use several different methods to treat these issues including, but not limited to exercise, mobilization/manual therapy, ultrasound and/or electrotherapy, motor learning and development, and patient/family education. Interventions often include the use of assistive and adaptive devices such as walkers, canes, wheelchairs, orthotics, and prosthetics.
Finally, an important component of patient management involves teaching the patient appropriate ways to move or perform particular tasks to prevent further injury and promote health and wellness. If you feel you are having issues that are affecting your quality of life, please don’t hesitate to contact your physician, and ask about a referral to physical therapy. Until next time!
